who’s the real canon gay of evangelion? kaworu, shinji, maya, and mari move aside  - a lot of people don’t know that makoto hyuga was supposed to be canonly gay, too. anno and co. slipped a quiet allude to his sexuality in the original episode 24 drafts (the same drafts that had kaworu and shinji kiss). ultimately the idea was trashed and promptly replaced with his crush for misato, likely for the same reasons they trashed the original kawoshin kiss. 

here’s the scene in question (you can read the entire draft here):

HYUGA: Seems like we’ve got ourselves involved in a pretty unbelievable organization.

[HYUGA hands MISATO more documents.]

HYUGA: Here’s my research on the Fifth Child. There’s nothing particularly suspicious in his history. He’s been in contact with the committee, but there’s no sign of involvement. As far as family goes, it seems there’s been some turbulence there. You could say he’s just a garden-variety pretty boy who’s had an unfortunate life.

MISATO: Just your type of guy, huh?

In defense of Shinji Ikari and the Rebuild series

I recently got into NGE from watching the rebuilds, and I really enjoyed them, so I checked out the original series and read a lot of metas and stuff online. 

And idk, I felt a little disturbed at the common trains of thought that seem to permeate the fandom. Like recently I read this one meta that was like, “Shinji doesn’t care for others that’s why he’s so self-absorbed”, “Shinji doesn’t love himself, that’s why he’ll never change. If he loved himself but hated his life he would make an effort to change but he doesn’t”, which ended with the “lovely” message of “if you don’t change, your life will always be shit.”

And it just got me thinking about the common views held in modern western society – this obsession with the idea of “loving yourself”. I don’t even know where it came from or what if even really means, only that everyone seems always be going on about it. “Just love yourself, and you won’t be sad anymore.” This idea of placing the onus of everything on the individual, and eliminating outside factors. The person who wrote the meta placing on the blame on Shinji himself, ignoring his crappy circumstances that led him to be that way. 

It’s just that, for a while, even before I got into eva, I’ve been annoyed by people that the only thing depressed people need to do to stop being depressed is to “learn to love themselves.” The idea brought up by the op of the meta that if Shinji was simply “less selfish” he would spend all his time caring for other people and not focusing on his self-hatred. But I feel like that’s the thing - when you’re depressed, it’s very hard to care about anything or anyone outside yourself.

And is Shinji even selfish anyway? People act like he’s the most awful person just because he’s not happy and stable all the time, but he regularly saves the world and everyone in it?? And how could he possibly change when he’s operating in circumstances beyond his control - namely, being forced to pilot the eva. I don’t think that being unhappy with your situation and yourself is a crime???

Kaworu is really admirable to me because of his complete fearlessness that stays consistent between the versions.

Kaworu’s huge AT power and tranquility is *because* he doesn’t care what happens to himself. If he isn’t particularly invested in a certain outcome/want anything personally, what is there to fear? And without fear, he has absolute freedom - hence why he is the Angel of Free Will.

But then, if he wasn’t personally invested, why would he be spending so much time and effort trying to help Shinji, isn’t that kind of the definition? Unless there actually is something that he wants but knows it is pointless to act on…

That aside, I was wondering what it would take for a real human to be like that, but I think it would be impossible…because at the root of fear is self-preservation, is it not? As long as we desire to live, we are not free, right?

Except Kaworu does have fear. He’s not fearless.

Ohhh awesome! I didn’t know about those files! There’s just so much content it’s hard to find that stuff!

That makes an interesting bit of sense and answers the other question I couldn’t quite figure out - because if he’s gonna be involved at all, certainly there *is* something he should care about. Like. You can’t involve as much effort as he does and still want for nothing and/or be 100% altruistic. That’s actually exactly what I was confused about! Thanks for that.

Also it makes sense because if it’s only one fear, that’s still a hell of a lot less than any human would ever have and still accounts for the fact why the AT Field is so strong. Very cool.

you didn’t ask for this but here’s my 2 cents on kaworu’s motivation lol,, in response to the first post you made too

, remember that pretty much everyone was suspicious of him when they first saw him in nge, and in rebuild they even built a choker to kill him bc they were afraid of him, but both times the only person to actually treat him like a person and be nice to him was Shinji. Knowing that he probs grew up w/o any kind of friendship or love it makes sense that he would become so attached, just as Shinji became attached to him. 

idk why a strong AT field would mean being fearless/having few fears. unless they said that in the show & i missed something? bc didn’t kaworu say that what humans call an AT field is just “that wall that encloses every mind that exists?“ doesn’t it represent the walls that ppl put up against each other? so in that sense, doesn’t a strong AT field indicate a more isolated/closed-off mind, in other words, more fears or a very strong fear? It’s shown that the loneliness and the pain that Angels feel is very powerful and what motivates them to merge with Adam. & i’m sure kaworu has other fears like shinji getting hurt, for example.  or, you know, the reason his AT field is so strong is just cuz he’s Adam lol

Kaworu has the same problems in a way that Shinji does - loneliness and the feeling of being used/having no agency. In the classified files, he’s also called a “manipulated child.” The irony of Kaworu is that despite being the angel of free will he actually has very little free will and maybe he knows that and is frustrated by it. His fixation with ending his own life may stem from this frustration, because he sees dying as the only way to exert his free will. In the drafts of ep. 24 it even implied that he was suicidal from the scars on his wrists.

 Kaworu was to Shinji like Arael and Armisael were to Asuka and Rei  In that he saw that Shinji was lonely like him and wanted to understand him. But since he had a human form, he was able to properly communicate with Shinji unlike the Arael who ended up violating Asuka’s mind. before he dies, he tells Shinji that he made his life meaningful - seeing as before he literally had no meaning in his life other than to cause third impact, I think this actually makes a lot of sense. That he would prefer to live for someone else instead of himself bc his life is literally meaningless otherwise.  

I think the problem is the assumption he doesn’t feel all these emotions or human weaknesses like everyone else . imo kaworu is meant to show that angels and humans are really alike, if that wasn’t already made clear with  Armisael. they’re both yearning for contact with another being, but w/ the consequences of getting hurt (in the angels’ case it’s more extreme hurt like literally everyone dying). But humans can never see that bc they just can’t communicate with Angels. Until Kaworu comes along and is able to communicate with Shinji. How else does he know all that shit about “man feels pain in his heart” if he hasn’t experienced it himself? And Shinji even says “he was like me.” So the theme of communication and stuff..


If you watch this video from NGE2, it gives an interesting insight?view? of Kaworu and Shinji’s relationship. It shows if Shinji tried to prevent Kaworu’s death wish by convincing him that he’s important to him &that he has other reasons to exist rather than just fulfilling his angelic destiny.. At one point Kaworu even says (bitterly?) “do my feelings even matter to you Lilin?”  & when Shinji asks if he’s happy to be alive, he can’t even answer. He actually does care about what others think of him. He thinks he should die bc everyone sees him as an enemy so there’s no point in him living bc he’s isolated/disliked.

It also shows that he isn’t truly free bc he keeps going on about his destiny and fate and how he /has/ to do these things, even tho he doesn’t want to.

When Shinji tells Kaworu to live, Kaworu says that if he does, he’ll be alone, so Shinji says that Kaworu will never be alone bc they’ll always be together. ;_;   

yh he’s an ambiguous character in the actual show. but if you read/watch the official supplementary materials and shit it can all start to make sense. bUT that’s just my interpretation .. ppl can interpret him in lots of other ways TvT
